Turning 65? Here’s Your Medicare Enrollment Checklist

If you’re approaching your 65th birthday, it’s time to start thinking about Medicare. Whether you’re planning to retire or keep working, enrolling in Medicare at the right time ensures you avoid late penalties and get the coverage you need. This simple checklist will help you understand what to do and when to do it as you transition into Medicare.

1. Know Your Initial Enrollment Period

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a 7-month window:

  • It starts 3 months before the month you turn 65
  • Includes your birthday month
  • Ends 3 months after your birthday month

You should start reviewing your options early, ideally when you’re 64 and a half, so you’re ready to enroll as soon as you’re eligible.

2. Understand the Parts of Medicare

Before enrolling, you need to understand what each part of Medicare covers:

  • Part A: Hospital insurance (usually free if you’ve worked 10+ years)
  • Part B: Medical insurance (doctor visits, outpatient care, monthly premium required)
  • Part C: Medicare Advantage (an alternative to Original Medicare, often includes extra benefits)
  • Part D: Prescription drug coverage

Some people also choose Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans to help cover out-of-pocket costs.

3. Decide Between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage

You’ll choose either:

  • Original Medicare (Parts A & B) plus optional Part D and/or Medigap
  • Medicare Advantage (Part C) which bundles A, B, and usually D into one plan, often with extra benefits like dental and vision

Your decision depends on your healthcare needs, provider preferences, and lifestyle.

4. Confirm Employer Coverage if You’re Still Working

If you plan to keep working after 65, talk to your employer’s HR department to see if your group health coverage is considered “creditable”. If it is, you may be able to delay Part B and Part D without penalties. If not, you should enroll when first eligible to avoid lifetime late fees.

5. Sign Up for Medicare on Time

  • Enroll in Parts A and B through the Social Security Administration at ssa.gov or by calling 1-800-772-1213.
  • If choosing Medicare Advantage or Part D, speak with a licensed agent to compare plan options in your area.

6. Keep a Record of Everything

Save confirmation numbers, plan documents, and proof of creditable coverage (if delaying enrollment). These may be needed if you change plans later or apply for Medigap.
